I-710 Livability Initiative
The I-710 Livability Initiative is being led by the Gateway Cities Council of Governments (GCCOG) and Metro who are working with I-710 corridor cities and communities located one mile east and west of the I-710. The purpose of this planning effort is to improve street accessibility for all modes of transportation—walking, bicycling, bus and train, and to improve connections across the freeway.
This work is funded by a grant separate from the I-710 Freeway Improvement Project to develop a Complete Streets and Active Transportation Improvements Plan which will be completed by August 2018.
What is Complete Streets and Active Transportation?
“Complete Streets” is based on the Idea that everyone, regardless of age, physical ability and income who bikes, walks or drives, should have an efficient, safe and convenient way to use the street. Complete Streets make it easy to cross the street, walk to shops, and bicycle to work by making improvements that calm and ease traffic, enhance pedestrian and bicycle facilities and connections to transit or other mobility options.
“Active Transportation” is a plan that focuses on strategies to increase walking, bicycling and transit use.
Potential Benefits to I-710 Neighborhoods
- Upgraded crosswalks and traffic signals to benefit all commuters
- New Bicycle Lanes and Bicycle stations
- Much needed Shade at Bus Stops and Rest Areas
- Improved Lighting for better visibility and safer streets
- Better access to the LA River, Parks and Open Space
- Community Beautification through Public Art projects
Listening to the Community
Metro is conducting outreach to I-710 communities, stakeholders and cities. The community outreach and input will support the development of bicycle and pedestrian enhancements that can be funded by grants for design and construction.
We will be holding Community Meetings and be at community at events to hear what you think about making your streets more comfortable, safe, and accessible for all roadway users. See Upcoming Meetings and Events. Additional dates and locations will be added!
