Airborne pollution from cars and trucks have a very real public health impact. Not only do they contribute to respiratory problems, but also to health problems ranging from low birth weights to heart disease. (For an in-depth look, read http://ow.ly/QVe53003sEd.)

Fortunately, most new cars and trucks emit far less pollution than older models. The only question that remains is how to get more of the clean vehicles in service.

That’s a problem we’ve faced here in southeastern Los Angeles County, where we’ve worked aggressively to improve the air quality of our busy cities. One strategy we’ve used is a buyout of some 650 of the most heavily polluting older trucks on the road. Check out the results and our additional clean air initiatives at http://ow.ly/CYy13003tjg
