Highways for the 21st century

President Eisenhower’s Interstate Highway system had far-reaching effects. It has proven to be a boon for jobs creation and economic development, and a blessing for drivers on the move. (More on the impacts here: http://ow.ly/BDgc3003kGh.)
But much has changed since the 1950s. Today, we also understand that freeways helped spawn urban sprawl and contribute to pollution. As the infrastructure ages, however, we have a chance to upgrade to a more sustainable model.
That’s the approach we are taking here in southeastern Los Angeles County. The Gateway Cities area is bisected by I-710, and the Council of Governments recently completed a plan to both ease traffic congestion and reduce harmful pollution. You can read about the plan here: http://ow.ly/EeFZ3003lQP
