The “smart growth” movement in urban planning started out as a way to improve the livability of cities with bike- and pedestrian-friendly clusters of dense communities. (Lots more ideas and info here: http://ow.ly/wAmJ3002U7u.)
Today, with the growing threat of climate change, smart growth is providing new tools to help reduce greenhouse gasses that contribute to the problem.
Take Los Angeles County. To cut greenhouse gasses, the Gateway Cities Council of Governments has launched an ambitious planning initiative that includes many of the foundation principles of smart growth. Check out the planning documents at http://ow.ly/E5wf3003jP5.
