Why parks matter

Parks and green space serve a vital role in urban areas, and it goes far beyond aesthetics.

Parks improve community by serving as public gathering spaces; they perform an environmental function by cleaning air and water; and they have economic value, too, by raising property values. (For an in-depth look at green space benefits, check this study: http://ow.ly/rdNh300inVS.)

Here in southeastern Los Angeles county, we have a deep appreciation for our parklands and other recreational facilities. In the city of Hawaiian Gardens, for instance, you can find our citizens enjoying racquetball, swimming, softball, and other activities, both structured and not, at area parks and recreation centers.
