INVESTING IN THE FUTURE
The Gateway Cities COG region has substantial assets. Areas of regional strength include infrastructure and human capital, as well as the region’s proven ability to successfully collaborate on major projects. For example, the region has been successful in identifying sources of funds to invest in significant transportation infrastructure improvements. Notable transportation improvement projects include: the I-710 Corridor Improvement Project, the SR-91/I-605/I-405 Corridor Improvement Project, and the Metrolink expansion project, to name a few. In all, there are approximately 22 completed, ongoing, or scheduled regional transportation projects.
High-Speed Rail System
The proposed California high-speed rail will connect Southern and Northern California, contribute to economic development, and create jobs. When completed (anticipated by 2029), the proposed rail system will run from the San Francisco Bay area to the Los Angeles Basin in under three hours, and will eventually extend to Sacramento and San Diego, roughly covering a total of 800 miles. The California High-Speed Rail Authority is also working with regional partners, including the Gateway Cities COG, to implement a statewide rail modernization plan that will invest billions of dollars in local and regional rail lines as well.
When implemented, the high-speed rail project will have major employment impacts and bolster the regional economy from construction spending, productivity and output improvements, reduced travel time and improved accessibility to markets across California.
