The I-710 is the main transportation artery for the San Pedro Bay Ports and for many, if not most, of the residents of Southeast Los Angeles County. The COG has long sought to address the congestion on the I-710 freeway, which contributes to various transportation and environmental challenges in the subregion. The vast expansion of freight movement from the San Pedro Bay Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles over the past thirty years, along with the mass population growth around the corridor, has placed a strain on the freeway, which was built and designed for freight movement volumes of the 1950s. With global trade and commerce on the rise, the ports depend on the stability of the corridor to provide access to warehouses, transloading facilities within the sub region and beyond.

The COG has worked with LA Metro, Caltrans District 7, LA County, and residents to create solutions around the issues and concerns facing the I-710 southern corridor. Councilmember Fernando Dutra of the City of Whittier represents the Gateway Cities Subregion on the LA Metro Board of Directors, and his leadership aligns with the COG’s advocacy efforts to find workable solutions that will fulfill our mission within our policy priority areas. The COG has led various working groups to pursue solutions, including I-710 TAC (managed jointly with Metro) and the I-710 Ad Hoc Committee (active 2021-2022).
